Stéphana, à l’étudier en sculpteur, n’était pas belle, et cependant son premier aspect vous saisissait. Sous son front trop haut et trop peu uni pour celui d’une femme, on voyait pour ainsi dire sourdre la pensée. Ses grands yeux humides et d’un noir velouté vous pénétraient de respect et d’attendrissement en se fixant sur vous. Une pâleur d’ambre voilait toute sa figure d’un nuage qu’éclairait, comme le faible rayon d’une matinée d’automne, un regard triste et charmant.
